BEST value (by far) in this size of cell phone handset, at the moment, February 12, 2015
    D. Christensen (Leominster, MA United States) –

OK, for Christmas last year…my wife was hinting that she wanted a larger phone. “Larger” meant, something larger than 4.3” that she was currently using. Around the same time, she was starting to get heavily into Android games, for some odd reason. And while the LG phone she was using was capable…it was loading some games slowly. The only other input I got was that she liked white or gold color. Plus, she mentioned that she and various friends had enjoyed Lenovo brand smart phones in the past…
I immediately found an LG G3. It looked fantastic. But the price was a bit more than I wanted to spend. So I did extensive research to see what else was out there. I kind of went at it like a PC / computer build. I was researching chipsets and stuff like that to see what the REAL bargains were.
I was searching by features when I stumbled upon this gem, the Lenovo A916. Yeah, I found a lot of other phones also in my feature search. Like a Cubot S308 (my personal cell phone) I reviewed earlier. But seeing as Lenovo was a brand I was already familiar with, and one we already OWN (we have a 10” Lenovo android tablet that is incredibly high quality…for an android tablet)…it was easy for me to think my search might be over. And then I looked at the usual vendors to see that the price was SHOCKINGLY LOW. Well, that kind of sealed the deal.
While I am familiar with rooting Android devices (and have successfully done so a few times in the past), I have not even attempted to root my wife’s A916. In the picture (attached), there are 5 screen shots. 1st one shows the model, 2nd just confirms that it’s not rooted, 3rd shows google play store icon (I did not install this, it was installed by the factory), 4th shows page that opens if you click the google play icon, and 5th shows the screen that pops up if I do a search for “whatsapp”.
If the google play icon is a bit hard to see, that’s because my wife installed some kind of cupcake theme. (don’t ask, it is my wife’s phone…)
If I’m not careful, I’m going to end up sounding like a Lenovo salesman. HaHa. But seriously…octa-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of ROM, Android 4.4 WITH external memory card slot enabled (that is not standard on 4.4, unfortunately),
5.5” 720P display that looks fantastic in any lighting condition, at any angle…with accurate colors, too!
Plays even power-hungry games like it’s launching the calendar app…
Never gets overly warm, although some handsets with similar chipsets overheat during gaming… (that is not a problem with this A916)
Although Lenovo uses a custom UI on top of stock Android, all Lenovo really did was to un-clutter the stock Android, a bit. So Lenovo managed to improve the UI, while at the same time retaining all of the familiar features.
Takes fantastic pictures, front and back. My wife is taking a lot more selfies since she got this thing. Haha…
Voice and media sound quality are both above average (better than Samsung and LG, by the way) LOUD AND CLEAR!
Logs some of the fastest download speeds I’ve ever seen on an Android device, over Wi-Fi.
Has GREAT battery life (easily goes more than a day, even if under constant use).
The controls respond instantly, probably do to the octa-core processor and 1GB of RAM. There is never any lag, ever…
This should easily activate on AT&T in the U.S. market. I popped in a 3G KT/Olleh sim for my wife (we live in South Korea). Yeah, it’s a 4G handset. Only, the 4G service plans cost twice as much. And probably 99% of the data use is on Wi-Fi anyway, so why pay for the 4G?
Price, price and PRICE (more on that later)
I really can’t say enough good things about this phone!!!
    The one CON:
The only minor glitch I have found is the bottom 1/8th-3/16” of touch-screen is not as sensitive as the rest of the touch-screen is. Until I got used to it, I was making a lot of typos. In particular…if you go to hit the space bar (before you are used to it, that is), the space bar will be kind of hit and miss, depending on WHERE your finger lands on the space bar.
But my wife is the primary user of this phone. She can text at about 3000 WPM with this thing, all day long!!! (OK, slight exaggeration…but she’s really REALLY fast at texting with this thing…) And I wasn’t kidding about the “all day long” part. Sigh…
I guess I could list a second “con” as, it’s hard to tear this thing out of my wife’s hands, even for a few seconds. (!!!)
Now, why I rate this thing 5 stars:
If we search for octa-core cell phones with display size of 5-6” and RAM of 1GB minimum and display resolution of 720P minimum, then we find the…

Beware, these are NOT factory sealed units. Mine contains a lot of other apps instead (like MoboMarket) that are highly disreputable and can steal personal information. In addition, some of the stock apps have been hidden from view.
